He said Andy is a Trainer, a boy that runs freight trains with his Guitar and travels from town to town and sings Songs... The CD he send was probably recorded somewhere in a train or in a car... It sounded Fantastic so I put him in a Studio near where he lives to record those 13 Songs for Voodoo Rhythm Records. Andy has a great way of playing his instrument and his voice is sometimes so wrong that it's Beautiful to listen too, and he's only fucking 18 years old godamit! Andy Takes the Roots of Woody Guthrie and Young Bob Dylan and makes them his own. On this Album there are 13 songs, including a couple covers and Traditionals, but most of them are written by Andy himself, and they are Great Songs in the Tradition of Americana Folk and western Ballads; with Banjo, Guitar and sometimes a sweet little church Organ that catapults you into another dimension and pushes you into another world. |

| REVIEWS THE REDEMPTION FAMILY (USA) his record is my sunday morning record...drink ice tea with a dash of bourbon, read Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory and listen to andy dale petty. ahh...a warm morning in a cold world.... PSYCHADELICFOLK (NL) Reverend Beat-Man, mentioned as the guy's spiritual advisor, seems to show much sympathy for this poor man's blues artist, guitarist, singer, who followed trails of Bob Dylan (when imitating simple blues (pro)portions), John Fahey (for having launched the definition for American primitive guitar style, with one cover to end the release with), while discovering old time country folk traditionals, also for some references to life, and while suffering the broke workman's blues. He isn't the best singer but again, he is real. And he plays the American primitive guitar style in a convincing walk your own road way. There are also a few sparse arrangements, like a bit of electric piano and stomping wood on "Empty Bottle Blues", and with "the coo-coo bird" played by banjo with guitar. The short songs and then instrumentals are entertaining, for me the singing began to annoy me, first on the Johnny Cash song cover, even worse on "Joe Hill" and getting too much by the time of "where the fiddle plays again". It's not just a poor voice, there's laziness in the fact of being poor, not becoming too rich in timbre and offerings, while the banjo/guitar explorations compensate for a large part, the sympathy of the real life interests could do as well. A MILLION WAYS AWAY (USA) ALL GOD'S CHILDREN HAVE SHOES, Andy Dale Petty's debut CD has been out for about a month. I was going to mention it earlier but got distracted. Sorry Andy.Anyway, the disc has Andy Dale playing 13 songs on various stringed insruments, There's some originals, covers of Dylan, Cash and Fahey and also a few traditional numbers. Members of The Pine Hill Haints and Thomas Function show up a couple times. So do some of Petty's older relations. This is as good as one of Petty's live sets. The disc is on Lightning Beat Man's Voodoo Rhythm Records. Get one! INCOGNITO (D) ANDY DALE PETTY spielte von frühester Kindheit an Mundharmonika und Ukulele, im Alter von 13 Jahren kam dann die Gitarre dazu, und schon bald zog das Ausnahmetalent durch die Kleinstädte Tennessees um mit traditionellem Country Folk sein Geld zu verdienen. Seine Musik verbindet Elemente von Negro Spirituals, frühen Arbeitersongs, Parlor Piano Songs die er für Gitarre arrangiert hat, sowie einer Prise Bluegrass. ANDY DALE PETTY hat alle Instrumente selbst eingespielt, dazu saß ZACH JEFFRIES am Klavier, BEN HOWARD war für die dezenten Percussions zuständig, und REVEREND BEATMAN sorgte für den spirituellen Beistand. Zeitloser Country Folk der Extraklasse. GONZO CIRCUS (NL) Reverend Beat-Man heeft voor de nieuwe release op zijn fameuze Voodoo Rhythm-label eens geen garage, trash of bluesband op zijn kanis getikt, maar een echte folkie onder zijn paraplu genomen. Andy Dale Petty is een rasechte Amerikaan en straatmuzikant die door het vele spelen op straat al een heel doorleefde stem heeft gekweekt, al is ie dan nog zo jong. Achttien jaar is hij en toch speelt hij, gewapend met banjo, een aftandse gitaar en zijn schitterende stem, volleerde versies van traditionals, covers van zijn grote voorbeelden Bob Dylan ('Walking Down The Line'), Johnny Cash ('He Turned The Water Into Wine') en John Fahey ('Sunflower River Blues') en eigen nummers die potdikke nergens moeten onderdoen voor de gespeelde klassiekers. De folkmuziek met hier en daar een snuifje gospel en country is simpel en puur. Andy Dale Petty wil niet vernieuwen maar het door hem zeer geliefde genre zo authentiek en doorleefd mogelijk uitvoeren. En daar slaagt hij met verve in. We zijn zelf niet zo'n liefhebber van folk en denken daarbij al snel aan bloemetjeshemden en teensletsen, maar deze plaat is dermate goed gedaan, met schitterende teksten en raakpunten met Woody Guthrie en Leadbelly dat we overstag zijn gegaan voor deze jonge snaak. Mooie plaat voor elke dag en elk moment, een rustpunt tussen het machtige gitaarlawaai dat bij ons gewoonlijk zijn rondjes draait. Mais ne cherchez plus ...Vous avez devant vous et d'ici quelques secondes entre vos oreilles, la révélation folk-blues-americana de l'année 2008.All God's children have shoes est un album très court, trop court : 13 chansons dont quelques reprises (dont le génial instrumental Sunflower River Blues, originellement de John Fahey), 2 traditionnels, mais aussi et surtout des compositions originales.Comment résumer ce disque ?En quelques mots ... americana, folk, Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, banjo, guitare, western, blues, racines, fantastique, 10 / 10, énorme, trop court, train, religion, ... PLANET TRASH (NL) Even iets anders. Veel is er niet bekend over Andy Dale Petty. Is ook niet nodig, het gaat immers om de muziek die hij maakt. Het belangrijkste dat bekend is is dat hij jong is, uit Amerika afkomstig en een plaat heeft opgenomen voor Voodoo Rhythm met daarop dertien nummers. Veel heeft Petty (voor zover ik weet geen familie van Tom) niet nodig om All God's Children Have Shoes te maken. Een banjo, een gitaar en een stem zijn de voornaamste bestandsdelen waar de muziek uit bestaat. De vergelijking met grote folknamen als Bob Dylan en Woody Guthrie is snel gemaakt en Petty past prima in de Amerikaanse folktraditie. Voor een jong broekie heeft Petty al een redelijk doorleefde stem. Dat krijg je als je veel op straat hebt geleefd om al spelend en zingend op de hoek van de straat aan de broodnodige dollars te komen. Een folkplaat maakt meestal geen grote indruk op me, maar Andy Dale Petty is het gelukt een blijvende indruk achter te laten. De laatste die dat bij me voor elkaar kreeg is Bob Dylan geweest. I rest my case. ROCKNBLOG (FR) Les retards de chemins de fer ont leurs avantages. Le premier est l'attente assis sur son siège le temps de la correction du problème technique. C'est ce qui m'a permis d'avaler les quelques trois heures et des broutilles de No Direction Home alors que le premier quart d'heure ne m'avait pas emballé. Derrière cette histoire de Bob Dylan magnifiquement documenté par Scorsese, j'ai découvert le pan classique dylanesque et sa volonté de ne pas devenir le héros de la révolte des jeunes américains. L'époque et ses acteurs montre les attentes de la jeunesse et l'espoir que la musique folk pouvait apporter. Étrangement, je reste plus intéressé par l'époque suivante de Dylan (avec le groupe) et ce monstrueux Like A Rolling Stone. Ça n'empêche pas d'apprécier les ambiances dénudées et contestataires de la musique folk qui m'a fait me plonger dans l'excellent All God's Children Have Shoes du très jeune Andy Dale Petty (tout juste 18 ans) et que dire de cette piste au titre arrivant à point nommé, He Turned the Water Into Wine. VELVET MUSIC (NL) Vraag de piepjonge Amerikaanse singer-songwriter Andy Dale Petty om zijn muziek te omschrijven en hij komt met de omschrijving "someone left your 78s in the trunk" op de proppen. Een rake typering, want Andy Dale Petty maakt op zijn debuut (?) All God's Children Have Shoes muziek uit vervlogen tijden. Muziek met invloeden uit de folk, de blues, de gospel en de country die zo nu en dan doet denken aan het werk van de jonge Dylan, maar veel vaker herinnert aan de ouwe rotten die Dylan ooit tot zijn eerste stappen in de muziek wisten te inspireren. Denk hierbij in eerste instantie aan Woody Guthrie, maar vergeet vervolgens ook Hank Williams en Leadbelly niet. All God's Children Have Shoes bevat een aantal bewerkingen van traditionals, een aantal covers, maar toch vooral eigen songs. Songs zonder opsmuk die slechts tot doel hebben de luisteraar in de ziel te raken. Iets wat Andy Dale Petty opvallend makkelijk af gaat, want wat heeft de Amerikaan een overtuigende plaat afgeleverd. Een plaat die uitblinkt door eenvoud en puurheid. Geen plaat die je iedere keer verrast met nieuwe spitsvondigheden; wel een plaat die je keer op keer weet te raken op de plek waar het het hardst aan komt. Liefhebbers van authentiek klinkende singer-songwriter platen zien door het enorme aanbod van het moment door de bomen het bos niet meer, maar het is te hopen dat ze deze prachtige plaat van Andy Dale Petty niet over het hoofd zien. Sleepwalkers RIP, 7" swissrecords (ch) Ob alle Kinder Gottes Schuhe haben, entzieht ich meiner Kenntnis. Andy Dale Petty aus Alabama hat auf jeden Fall eine Gitarre und weiss, wie man sie spielt. Dabei singt er, so nebenbei erwähnt, immer wieder über Gott. Bei näherer Betrachtung sind seine Songs aber nicht bloss «gottesfürchtig». Musikalisch wechselt er zwischen Folk, Country und Bluegrass hin und her. Anfangen tut «All god's children have shoes» aber eher ungewöhnlich. Eine Sixtiesorgel, psychedelisch verfremdet, führt erst mal auf eine falsche Fährte. Dann geht es aber los, Lagerfeuergitarre hervor. Bob Dylan hätte seine Freude, aber auch ein Johnny Cash, John Fahey, Woody Guthrie oder Leo Kottke (Petty lässt ab und an Instrumentals einfliessen). Der Alabamer zieht mit seiner Gitarre von Stadt zu Stadt. Da gibt es sicher jede Menge «Waltzing on the Saturday night astral plane»?! |
