from Bern Switzerland the old-school No-Hit Hobo Psycho-Western-Punkabilly Sensation: BOGOS !!!! 1st album Recorded by Zeno Tornado, Punk v/s Ennio Morricone Banjo
ONCE UPON A TIME IN OLD BERN - Have a beer or 10 with me and let me tell you the story of the 4 young barflies, in 2009 near Bern they formed as: "Baseball Bat Boogie Bastards" as an old-school Psychobilly band, 3 young Punks and school friends who were no strangers to wild uncouth rock n' roll around semi-acoustic guitarist Ädu Bogo, double bass player Ritchu Bogo and stand-up drummer Mitchu Bogo crushed 50s rockabilly with country and trash beats from the 60s garage punk area and the simplicity of 70's punk bands into a wild mix of their own, in 2018 they took another step forward and morphed into the no-hit hobo-billy-punk sensation: BOGOS !!!! With Adri, an important component came into the band 'the Banjo from Hell' and they are now committed to Blue Grass Country or Hobo Folk... that was very good for them during the Corona period and they were therefore able to play a lot of acoustics, and with Mitchu Bogo is very active in the Bern scene as concert promoter and with his radio show "Swamp Digger Radio Show" on Radio Rabe the entire recordings and mixings where made by Zeno Tornado at Zeno’s Living Room in 2020

HYPNOSIS (MEX) One of the main characteristics of punk is freedom, although many times the musicians themselves are too closed-minded and avoid exploring unknown paths. Fortunately, none of that happens with Bogos, a new set that stands out for uniting several styles that could seem incompatible. The result is as unique as the idea of avoiding falling into established formulas. It all started in the small town of Bern in Switzerland. Despite being one of the wealthiest and most advanced countries in the world, it also has an important rock movement. As in any other place there are bars where young people go to drink alcohol and listen to distorted music at maximum volume. In the midst of this panorama, four young people met who on the outside could be the same as any other person. Tattooed arms, outlandish hairstyles and a profound taste for excess. Although when creating a new band they chose to expand their minds so as not to get stuck in the typical accelerated sound of punk. Once with the name of Bogos, it was time to incorporate dissimilar style traits with each other. Parts of country, hillbilly, psychobilly and western were added to the mix. In the end, a mix so strange that it could only be released by a label as risky as Voodoo Rhythm Records was obtained. The first LP of the quartet made up of Ädu Bogo (guitar), Ritchu Bogo (double bass), Mitchu Bogo (drums) and Adri (banjo) was conceived during the pandemic and now it could finally see the light. Through 15 pieces, it offers a musical amalgam where various sounds are appreciated, ranging from the most relaxed to the sweaty. It all starts with “Farewell to E Morricone” and the title is quite clear. A mysterious whistle immediately transports you to the spaghetti western films with which Sergio Leone established himself as one of the best filmmakers in history. The song lasts just a minute to immediately merge with “Hide In a Hole” and here you can feel the wildness for which bands like the Ramones became famous. Now, the final result of the set is not fortuitous. In Mitchu's case, he is a concert promoter in his hometown and is also the host of Radio Rabe's Swamp Digger Radio Show. From that space it spreads a wide range of sounds, which explains the ambitions of the quartet. At the same time, compositions like “Whiskey And Cigar” are completely biographical and make clear the habits of the members. The double bass and the banjo are instruments of great musical richness that offer harmonies that very few risk exploring. While “Madness” begins slowly and mysteriously until it ends in madness close to The Meteors and The Cramps. Bogos' courage to abandon the classic path of punk to venture into other paths is something that very few dare to do. It is also the clearest sign that impossible combinations do not exist. Even sounds that sound like enemies to each other can be compatible.
BOPPIN AROUND (NL) Most Voodoo Rhythm releases are sixties garage rock and other assorted noise, but every now and then something escapes from the snowy mountains that might be of interest to us as well, like these Bogos from Switzerland, hatched out of Swiss psychobilly band The Baseball Bat Boogie Bastards who released at least two albums and one split 45. As always the Voodoo Rhythm promo blurb crams together as many genres as possible, but the summary psycho-western-punkabilly quite nails it. The album, recorded and mixed by Zeno Tornado, kicks off with a twangy guitar instrumental in Ennio Morricone style including whistling and The Good The Bad And The Ugly ooh aah's, which however comes across as unfinished because it unexpectedly breaks off after one minute. This track is however not representative for the other 14 songs which are cowpunk with a lot of influence of Irish folk: loud energetic punky singalongs on speed with twang guitar, banjo, a crazy slapping double bass and an occasional washboard. Bogos will be enjoyed by the fans of similar international and domestic bands and by people who like to throw beer at concerts, as this adrenaline will seem too much of the same thing for the rest of mankind. Also out as LP (VR12123) including a free download. (Frantic Franky)
SCANNERSZINE (NZ) BOGOS - Empty Bottles {Voodoo Rhythm} This is pretty fun! Hailing from Bern, Switzerland, this 15 tracker is this quartet’s debut album and if you can imagine a fusion of Hillbilly Bluegrass, something like Psychobilly and solid Garage Punk Rock you’ll have an idea of what this is about - upright bass, banjo, washboard, roaring guitar work. Lots of highlights be it the early AGAINST ME! vibe of ‘Head Through The Wall’, THE CRAMPS-esque swagger of ‘Whiskey And Cigar’ and the raucous ‘Run Boys’ while best track could well be ‘Cant’ Take It’ that evokes the musical Pandora’s Box of WORLD/ INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY. Fun stuff, probably even better live and way more convincing than cheese-ball rubbish like REAL MCKENZIES. Have to say though, opener ‘Farewell To E Morricone’ sounds way outta tune. Skip the first track and you’re onto a barrel of fun!! (20.01.23)
scene point blank (USA) I sauntered into the dimly lit old man's bar closing the door behind the impeding swirling snowstorm brewing outside. Upon my unnoticed entry(this was no Cheers!-no cries of Norm were echoed by patrons) my eyes were immediately drawn to a weathered figure slumped in a corner booth watching the ash of his cigarette burn into a long lingering arc. He sat alone, hunched over a glass of whiskey and a cheap draft. He wore a tattered cap pulled low over his one eye. Despite his ragged, chiselled appearance, there was something about him that commanded a secondary sideways glance. As I approached, he looked up and met my gaze with eyes that had clearly seen more than their fair share of hardships, pain and utter despair. He motioned for me to sit down not before shooting a quarter asking me to throw it into the jukebox and select The Pogues- Dirty Old Town. Empty Bottles are going down, one by one and two by two. Hey Mr, Bartender slide me one of the house specials down the well-worn wooden bar. Bogos are the ultimate theme of this bar. Hailing from Bern Switzerland -Bogos sound like a twisted Pogues, Mano Negra, Gogol Bordello, 16 Horsepower interspersed with a little Merle Haggard, Cash and Flatts and Scruggs. Stripped down toe tapping, drunken jig, arm locked in arm and fisticuff bare-knuckle, fuckle, punch em up beer swillin' slobbering rubbery leg chicken dance. Bogos are the life source of the stiff corpse at a party. Want to wallow in misery and self-doubt and depression I would suggest digging out your Smiths' greatest hits compilations. 99 bottles of beer on the wall, 99 bottles of beer. Take one down and pass it around, 98 bottles of beer on the wall etc 8 Large Pints Out of Ten! Christopher D, March 8, 2023
