Taking a lead from the death balladeers of the '50s and the girl groups of the early '60s, she sings of seeking love (often with the "wrong" man), murder (of mice and men!) and hedonistic relationships. Though she doesn't want to give the impression that she's easy, and that may be one of the reasons death seems never too far away. The grimy subjects are attacked with a raw and powerful stripped down blues, which sounds like an imagined PJ Harvey fronting the White Stripes or Golden Animals, and "Hips Kids" has more than a touch of Shangri-Las about it. Denn bei BECKY LEE AND DRUNKFOOT handelt es sich nicht um eine Kooperationen von Musikern. Nee, es sind einfach BECKY LEE und ihr besoffener Fuß. Gitarre, Gesang, Bassdrum, Floortom und Snare zugleich - allein die schiere Ungewöhnlichkeit dieses unumstritten emanzipatorischen Projekts macht dieses Album, das verrückterweise laut Label mit über einem Jahr Produktionszeit zu Buche schlägt, einfach hörenswert. Mit dem für Voodoo Rhythm Records typischen Sound, der sich rau und bluesig gibt, rotzt das gestandene Weib ihre Debüt-Platte auf den sandigen Bretterboden. Der Opener „Lies" stampft sich mit Kick und Snare durch die Kante, der kernige Gesang der Braut aus Arizona bettet sich in straighte Single-Notes ihrer Klampfe. Auch Folgestücke wie „Man Like You" und mein persönlicher Favorit „Shoot Em Down" sprechen Bände aus dem nomadischen Leben von Frau Walters. Ihre Songs sind so true, dass sie sich durch das stärkste Denim brennen und dir eine staubige Lunge hinterlassen. Renegade-Style. Dass auf Platte immer etwas gebastelt wird, ist klar. So gibt es natürlich für etwas dickeren Sound manchmal auch zwei Gesangsspuren, Shaker und ein schönes Panning. Aber solange die einzigartige BECKY LEE AND DRUNKFOOT diese bodenständigen, eigentlich wenig femininen Nummern auch live so überzeugend bringt, ist die Welt in Ordnung. Biram, Possessed By Paul James of de bekendere Seasick Steve, het zijn maar een paar namen die ons onmiddellijk voor de geest komen als het om de mannelijke equivalenten gaat. Aan de vrouwen kunnen we nu ook Becky Lee Walters toevoegen, die met haar Becky Lee And Drunkfoot een meer dan degelijke plaat heeft opgenomen. Als tiener belandde ze vanuit Arizona in Zwitserland. Ze deed een beetje van alles dat het licht niet mag zien tot ze een gitaar ter hand nam en begon op te treden. Dat doet ze sinds 2008 en het werd tijd voor een debuut. Een jaar heeft het geduurd, want 'madame' was nooit tevreden, aldus Beatman himself. Het wachten en het vele werk levert wel iets op: elf prachtige, uit het leven gegrepen murder songs die over het chaotische leven van Becky Lee, al dan niet bijgekleurd, verhalen. Verraad, dood en lust vormen de hoofdingrediënten, en toch mishandelt Becky Lee haar gitaar, stem en primaire drums absoluut niet. Het lijkt wel engelengezang bovenop een meerkoppige band die tot in de kleinste details uitmuntend werd geproduceerd. We begrijpen Beatman meteen. Becky is geen vrouw om zonder handschoenen aan te pakken. Elk detail moest kloppen, de perfectie benaderen en als het ware de murder ballads van bijvoorbeeld Nick Cave de loef afsteken. En ze doet het nog ook. 'Hello Black Halo' klinkt als een voldragen werkstuk van een uitgebreide band en toch, slechts één dame heeft het volledige roer in handen. Le pied, ça absorbe moins l'alcool que le foie, ça peut servir d'ami imaginaire, tout alcoolique qu'il puisse être, et c'est surtout bien pratique d'en avoir au moins deux quand on décide de se la jouer one woman band. Becky lee et son DrunkFoot sillonnent inlassablement les routes et dispensent leur blues Rock'n'roll déchiré d'amour. Premier album officiel Hello Black Halo annonce bien la couleur : noir, comme ton moral quand ton bien aimé t'as quittée, virée, trompée ou même bâchée. Heureusement qu'elle a son Drunkfoot Becky, ils ont l'air bien tous les deux, et en tout cas, ils sont bien synchros, ça c'est le moins qu'on puisse dire. Ecouter l'album et se laisser porter par la rage, faire du air guitare inconsidérément et chanter à tue tête les refrains que tu gardes des journées entières, c'est une chose, mais voir Becky et son Drunkfoot s'adonner à leur activité favorite, c'est juste impressionnant. Tu te vois toi, d'une main gratter ta guitare avec une baguette coincée entre les doigts, de l'autre te balader sur les accords de ta gratte, pendant que ton drunkfoot bat le rythme, que ta première main frappe la cymbale ou la caisse claire, alors que pendant ce temps là tu chantes (juste), et que ton autre pied (et oui tu en as deux, autant ne pas le laisser s'ennuyer tout seul dans son coin) lui aussi bat le rythme... Moi, je ne m'y vois pas. Les one woman band il y en a peu à travers le monde, il faut dire que l'exercice n'a pas l'air des plus aisés, je ne vais pas vous refaire la démonstration, non. Hello Black Halo tourne en boucle sur ma platine, c'est un bijou où rien n'est à jeter, l'accomplissement après des dizaines, voire des centaines de scènes écumées, l'écrin qui reçoit le nectar de cette songwriter, à ne rater sous aucun prétexte. Parce que Oui, Becky Lee compose, écrit et interprète, un joyau vous dis-je. This is indeed a long-awaited album from one of today's most respected and appreciated one-woman band. Of course one-woman bands are somewhat of a rarity in what is typically a rather male dominated genre. But most of those among the handful of brave and talented women, like Becky Lee, do what they do remarkably well...so much so that artists such as Molly Gene One Whoaman Band, Venus Fly Trap One Girl Band, Tanny Barbarino, Two Tears, and Becky Lee herself receive recognition almost equal to, or equal to male greats like Reverend Beat-Man, Bob Log III, Possessed by Paul James, and Scott H. Biram, just to name a few. "Hello Black Halo" consists of eleven original Becky Lee & Drunkfoot songs. So far I have only listened to two tracks that I managed to locate online, both of which proved to be well-written songs marked by a singularly brilliant sound. It is a sound that somehow seems like more than one artist can produce all by her lonesome, and yet Becky Lee delivers a rather full sound, all of her appendages working simultaneously to make it happen - her strumming hand working the strings of her guitar while holding a drumstick with which she keeps time on a floor tom, her legs operating the pedals for her bass drum and snare and hi-hat/tambourine setup, and her singing voice, at once honeyed and barbed, filtered through a standard mic. Yeah, that's right, I used the singular as Becky Lee and Drunkfoot is a one-man band, but man, she hits like a tornado through a trailer park. I dig one-man bands, but they typically only stand-up to a few listens as most songs fall into the monotony of a drizzling rain. Becky Lee , on the other hand, brings all the thunder, driving rain, reprieves, and excitement of a summer storm. Hello Black Halo rolls in with dark clouds of betrayal, death, and lust, as. Becky Lee abuses the hell out of her guitar using the drums only to drive the song into the open country of your speakers and her voice strikes with the power of lightning. In "Killer Mouse", she breaks from the beating drum into a small lead that proves Lee understands how a song needs to break down for the words or music to have the desired power. The tracks that follow are all great and enjoyable, but the track that stands out is "Hip Kids", a suburban summer lament. In this track, Lee channels the Shondells in a 1950′s dirge about being finished with the posturing multitudes who are too cool to do anything loose or reckless (or even treat a woman right). "Hip Kids" is a song I never knew could be written. It manages to be sad, rebellious, and angry, in the same four minutes. As the storm ends, with "Beginning of the End" there is honestly nothing to do but look at what the storm has left, turn the record over, and begin again.
